Some of the most popular titles from the golden age might have sold thousands, even over ten thousand copies in some cases, the majority might have only had 1000 or 2000 units ever pressed and certainly won’t have any represses in the future. So these really are very rare items for the serious collector. They used to sell for $99 too!

- Sound On SoundDemo Buy or Version. REX files are one of the most innovative sample formats ever to have been created. They allow loops to be sliced up, although it can be a bit of an art, and then replayed at any tempo but software that supports the format. It writes synthetic decays that you hear when loops are slowed but works particularly well for drums.
No tagging, but REX files are excellent quality and great for drum loops. REX files were developed by the people who worked at Steinberg and went on to develop Reason ReFills too. AMG released the World's first REX file library in 1998. Apple Loops were developed by the person behind ACIDized WAV files. Unsurprising maybe then that they basically applied the same concept to the Mac's native Aif files to make them into Apple Loops. Again adding slice, pitch and tag info to each Apple Loop. Apple Loops are complete unsupported with any SDK by Apple so any third parties reading them have to 'wing it'.
The format has had some quirks along the way that have largely gone unnoticed but do exist. Apple Loops are typically Aif files but Apple has recently released.caf format ones. These Core Audio Format files cannot be written and are another 'mystery' format. Apple Loops are widely used and growing in popularity. Apple Loops will be around for a while. AMG released the World's first Apple Loops library - UltraMagnetic Beats.
The ReFill format was developed by Propellerheads who had previous created the REX format whilst part of Steinberg. A ReFill is a format unique to their Reason app. It allows the composition of lots of custom content for Reason, including REX and WAV files, into one large, virtual studio or ReFill. ReFills are only compatible with Reason and REX files inside them can't be used outside of Reason therefore. AMG produced the World's first ReFill when we released 160dB in Reason ReFill format in early 2001.
WAV files are the most widely compatible and 'basic' audio file format. All music software will read them as well as many other apps. ACIDized WAV files were developed that had slice info and tags in them too. These can be replayed at different tempo and pitch. Like Apple Loops they work especially well for some pitched instruments but not quite as well as REX handles drum loops. In general though REX, Apple Loops and ACIDized WAVs are a quantum leap on from plain old WAV files.
Having said that WAV files are often less expensive and you can always create REX files or Apple Loops, etc. From them yourself too.
